Newton Play Yard

Newton calls it a Travel Crib and Play Yard. Used as a play yard the numbers that matter change — floor area and wall height, not packed size.

Newton sells the play yard in two published sizes. The Deluxe sets up 49.5 x 35 x 28 in with a 48 x 34 in sleep surface at 17 lb; the Compact sets up 47 x 34 x 27 in with a 38 x 24 x 1.5 in surface and collapses to 24 x 10 x 10 in (newtonbaby.com, read 2026-10-01, and newtonbaby.com, read 2026-10-01).

Buy the Deluxe if it is going to sit in a room, the Compact if it is going to travel. And if you are here for the bassinet: Newton lists one as sold separately for the Deluxe, not included and not listed for the Compact.

One product, two names

Newton’s full product names are “Compact Travel Crib & Play Yard” and “Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard”. There is no separate play yard model, and nothing changes between the two modes: it is a mesh enclosure on a steel frame with the mattress resting directly on the floor, used for sleeping at night and for containment during the day.

Which is worth saying plainly, because the specs you shop on flip depending on which job you are buying for. As a travel crib, the number that matters is the collapsed size — 24 x 10 x 10 in beats 35 x 12.5 x 11 in and it is not close. As a play yard, the collapsed size is irrelevant and the number that matters is floor area, where 48 x 34 in beats 38 x 24 in by roughly double.

Each column quoted from that brand's own page as cited under Sources, read 2026-10-01 or later. "Not published" means the figure is absent from the page we read — it is not a claim the feature does not exist.

Two rows deserve a second look. The sheet row: the cheaper Compact includes a fitted sheet and the more expensive Deluxe sells one separately. And the side door row: Newton publishes the side zip door explicitly for the Compact and not for the Deluxe on the pages we read, which is the opposite of what you would expect from the price.

The floor-area argument for the Deluxe

A play yard is a floor a child is allowed to be on. 48 x 34 in is about 1,630 square inches of that floor; 38 x 24 in is about 910. Nothing else in our registry publishes a bigger surface, and in a room where the point is to put a crawling baby somewhere safe while you do something else, that difference is the product.

The walls are also the tallest here at 28 in, on a steel frame with breathable mesh. For a child under the published 35 in height limit who is pulling to stand, that is the relevant number — and it is the one that runs out first, which is why travel cribs for two-year-olds exists as its own page.

The mattress is the actual reason to buy either one

Both sizes use the Wovenaire breathe-thru core — 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer on the Compact, which Newton states is machine washable cold on a gentle cycle, cover and core. The Deluxe publishes a fully washable core too.

That is not a comfort feature, it is a laundry feature, and it is the one thing on this page no competitor matches. A travel crib accumulates everything a toddler can produce in a hotel room, and everything else in the category gives you a wipeable vinyl pad. Our travel crib mattress guide goes through what every crib here publishes for its sleep surface, and most comfortable travel cribs ranks them on it.

Where it loses

Footprint, on both sizes. The Compact sets up 47 x 34 in — a bigger frame than the Guava Lotus’s 45.5 x 31.5 in and much bigger than the Alfa Lite’s 43 x 29 in — for a 38 x 24 in sleep surface. That is the worst frame-to-surface ratio in the table above, and in a small hotel room it is the spec you will notice.

Weight is the other one. If portability is the priority, the Alfa Lite is 12.5 lb and collapses to 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in, and the Lotus carries 15 lb on your back. Newton’s own answer is the Compact’s travel bag, which has hidden shoulder straps and a luggage sleeve — a good answer, and the reason the Compact rather than the Deluxe is the one that flies. The head-to-heads are at BabyBjörn versus Newton and Lotus versus Alfa Lite, and the full single-product writeup is the Newton travel crib review.

One honest note on Newton’s own figures

Newton publishes two different weights for the Compact: 12 lb in its FAQ and 13 lb in its key features. We print both rather than picking the flattering one, because we cannot verify which is current and a single confident number here would be invented precision. Every crib sold new in the US has to meet the same mandatory play yard standard regardless (cpsc.gov, read 2026-09-27); the weight is a shopping figure, not a safety one.

Good at

  • 48 x 34 in surface — about 1,630 square inches of floor for a child to be on
  • 28 in walls of breathable mesh on a steel frame, the tallest here
  • Fully washable Wovenaire breathe-thru mattress core
  • A bassinet and a cotton muslin floor-mattress sheet are sold separately
  • Published for children up to 35 in tall, with no weight limit stated

Bad at

17 lb and a 35 x 12.5 x 11 in fold make it the least portable thing Newton sells, and the bassinet and the sheet are both extra purchases on a $299.99 list price (newtonbaby.com, read 2026-10-01). As a travel product the Compact beats it; this is the version that stays put.

Bad at

A 38 x 24 in surface inside a 47 x 34 in frame is a lot of footprint for the sleep area you get — the frame is almost as big as the Deluxe's and the usable floor is about half. As a daytime play yard that is the wrong trade.

3Lightest alternative

Chicco Alfa Lite Lightweight Travel Playard

12.5 lb setting up 43 x 29 x 25 in and collapsing to 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in with a snap-open fold — lighter than either Newton and smaller to store.

Good at

  • 12.5 lb, lighter than either Newton figure
  • Collapses to 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in — the smallest stored package in our registry
  • Snap-open compact fold

Bad at

Chicco publishes no mattress dimension, no age or height limit and no certification statement on the page we read, which makes it impossible to compare the actual play surface against Newton's 48 x 34 in. It also has no published side door and no washable core.

Questions parents actually ask

What are the Newton play yard dimensions?

Newton publishes two sizes. The Deluxe sets up 49.5 x 35 x 28 in with a 48 x 34 in sleep surface and folds to 35 x 12.5 x 11 in at 17 lb. The Compact sets up 47 x 34 x 27 in with a 38 x 24 x 1.5 in sleep surface and collapses to 24 x 10 x 10 in; Newton publishes 12 lb in its FAQ and 13 lb in its key features.

Does the Newton play yard have a bassinet?

For the Deluxe, Newton lists a bassinet as sold separately, along with a cotton muslin floor-mattress sheet. It is not included in the box and it is not listed for the Compact on the page we read. If a bassinet level is what you want, our pack and play with a bassinet roundup compares products that include one.

Is the Newton a travel crib or a play yard?

Newton sells it as both — the full product name is Travel Crib & Play Yard. Mechanically it is one product: a mesh enclosure on a steel frame with the mattress resting on the floor. Which name you use depends on whether you care about packed size or floor area.

What is the weight limit on the Newton play yard?

Newton publishes no weight limit for either size, stating that the mattress rests directly on the floor rather than on a suspended platform. What it does publish is a height limit: children up to 35 in tall.

Which Newton size should I buy?

The Deluxe if it is staying in a room, for the 48 x 34 in floor. The Compact if it is going anywhere, for the 24 x 10 x 10 in collapse and the bag that converts to a backpack. The mattress technology and the side door are the same on both.
