In the first six months a wrap does something no buckle carrier does: it holds a small, floppy body in a shape that fits it, with no panel to adjust and no minimum size to reach. Three kinds of wrap, and who each suits
Stretchy wraps — Boba, Solly — are one long piece of knit fabric you tie around yourself before putting the baby in. They fit any wearer because the fabric does the adjusting, which makes them the only genuinely shareable option. Boba publishes about 5.5 yards of fabric (boba.com, read 2026-09-27); that is roughly 16.5 feet, and it is both the strength and the problem.
Pre-wrapped slings — the Baby K’tan — are the same idea sewn into a fixed double loop. You put it on like a garment. The cost is sizing: it is sold in wearer sizes rather than adjusting, so it cannot be shared between two differently sized adults.
Ring slings — WildBird and similar — thread one piece of fabric through two rings and sit on a single shoulder. Fastest on and off by a wide margin, least comfortable over an hour.

The spec that catches people out
Weight ceilings on wraps are lower than parents expect, and they are not interchangeable. Solly Baby publishes 8-25 lb (sollybaby.com, read 2026-09-27). Boba publishes 7-35 lb. That is a ten-pound difference, which in practice is the difference between a wrap you use for four months and one you use for fourteen. If you are buying one wrap and you want it to last, the number to compare is that ceiling — not the fabric, not the color.
What we’d skip
Wraps with no published weight range. Several marketplace listings give a fabric length and an age range and nothing else. Without a tested weight range you do not know what you are holding your baby in.
Ring slings with plastic rings. The rings are the entire load path. Aluminum or nylon rings made for babywearing are the only ones worth carrying weight, and any sling that does not name its ring material is not telling you the thing that matters most.
Very thick woven wraps, for a first wrap. They are durable and they carry a toddler beautifully, and they are also hot, bulky and hard to learn. Start stretchy.
What we would buy
For a first baby and a trip in the next three months, the Boba Wrap — the 35 lb ceiling means it does not expire halfway through, and one wrap covers both parents. For a summer trip somewhere humid, the Solly, accepting the shorter life. Are stretchy wraps safe for a newborn?
A correctly tied wrap that keeps the baby high on your chest, close enough to kiss, with the airway clear and the hips supported in a spread-squat position is a well-established way to carry a newborn. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute recommends that hip position specifically. The risk with wraps is not the design, it is a loose tie that lets the baby slump — which is why practicing at home matters.
How long can I use a stretchy wrap?
It depends on the published range, and they differ more than you would expect. Boba states 7-35 lb, Solly Baby 8-25 lb, Baby K'tan 8-35 lb. In practice most parents move to a structured carrier before the ceiling, because a heavy baby in a stretchy fabric sags no matter how well you wrap.
Wrap or structured carrier for a newborn?
A wrap fits a small body better and packs smaller; a structured carrier is faster and carries weight on your hips. If you are flying in the first three months, most people are better served by a wrap or the BabyBjörn Mini. We compare the two approaches directly in our wrap versus carrier page.
Can I wash a wrap on a trip?
Check the specific fabric, but cotton knit and modal wraps are generally machine washable, which is one practical advantage over a structured carrier full of foam and buckles. Assume a full day to air dry in a hotel room.
