A diaper bag for travel has one job a diaper bag for the park does not: it has to survive a security lane and an under-seat check. Depth is the spec that gets you at the gate
Everyone compares volume. Airlines constrain depth. United publishes a carry-on maximum of 22 x 14 x 9 in and states that on most flights you may bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, plus additional items including FAA-approved child restraint systems (united.com, read 2026-09-27). Personal item allowances are smaller than that again, and the dimension that fails is almost always the depth of a fully packed bag.
On the numbers above: the Ruvalino at 7.8 in and the Skip Hop at 8 in are the two most likely to go under a seat packed full. The Hap Tim at 12 in deep is the one most likely to be a problem. Opening flat is worth more than a pocket count
At a security lane, a bag that lays open in a bin gets a visual check and goes through. A top-loading bag gets emptied. Diaper bag totes, for flying. One shoulder occupied, permanently. You need both hands at every stage of an airport.
Bags deeper than about 10 in, as your personal item. Great capacity, wrong shape for under a seat.
Bags with no published dimensions. This is the one category where the exact numbers determine whether the bag works, and a brand that will not print them is asking you to find out at the gate.
Hard-shell or structured “designer” diaper bags. They do not compress into a footwell and they do not lay flat in a bin. Both matter more than the material.
