Travel Diaper Bag Checklist
Packed in the order you will reach for it, not in categories. The list is short on purpose.

The short answer
The short version: one diaper per hour of travel plus two, wipes, one wet bag, two changes of clothes for the baby and one top for you, all the feeding kit in one pouch, and the changing pad. Everything else is optional. Pack it in the order you will reach for it, not by category.
The list, in reach order
Outer pocket — the things you need in under five seconds. A pacifier (and a spare, in a case — Ruvalino includes one), a small pack of wipes, your phone, boarding passes. Anything you will want while holding a child with one arm goes here and nowhere else.
One feeding pouch. Bottles, formula, a small amount of water, snacks. All of it in one removable pouch, because this is the part that gets screened separately at a security lane and the difference between a fifteen-second and a four-minute inspection is whether you can hand over one thing.
One changing kit. Diapers — one per hour of travel door to door, plus two — a full pack of wipes, a cream if you use one, and the changing pad. Airplane lavatory tables are small, so check your pad’s size: Bag Nation publishes 24 x 13 in and Ruvalino 23 x 15 in.
One clothing pouch. Two full changes for the baby, one top for the adult. The adult top is the item nobody packs and everybody eventually needs.
One wet bag. A sealable bag for whatever comes off. On a long flight this is the difference between a manageable bag and a bag nobody wants to open.
Flat in the back panel. A muslin or light blanket, doubling as a sunshade, a privacy cover and something clean to put down. The most useful single item per ounce on this list.
The four things people forget
- A change of top for the adult. See above. Rolled, it is the size of a pair of socks.
- Enough diapers for a delay. People pack for the scheduled journey. Pack for the journey plus two hours.
- A wet bag. Hotel laundry bags work, and you have to remember to take one.
- A spare pacifier in a case. The one that hits a cabin floor is finished, and that is a long flight without a replacement.
Three things that are not worth the space
- A full-size bottle of anything. Decant. Full-size bottles are dead weight and a screening delay.
- More than two toys. A new small thing produced at hour three beats a bag of familiar toys at hour one. Volume is not the variable.
- A bottle warmer. Cabin crew will provide warm water on most flights, and a warmer is a brick of dead weight and a battery you have to think about.

Questions parents actually ask
How many diapers should I pack for a flight?
One per hour of travel door to door, plus two. That sounds like a lot and it is the figure that stops you rationing on a delayed flight. Diapers are light and compressible; running out on a tarmac is not recoverable.
Can I bring formula and breast milk through security?
In the US, formula, breast milk and baby food are screened separately and can exceed the normal liquid limits. They have to come out of the bag for screening, so keep them in one pouch you can hand over. Declare them at the start rather than waiting to be asked.
What is the one thing people forget?
A change of clothes for the adult. A spare outfit for the baby is on every list; the parent who gets covered at 30,000 feet spends the rest of the flight in it. A rolled t-shirt takes almost no space.
Do I need to pack a changing pad if the bag came with one?
No, but check its size. The bags that publish it run 23 x 15 in and 24 x 13 in. An airplane lavatory changing shelf is small, and a pad that does not cover it means the change happens on bare plastic.
What about the stroller and car seat?
Those are not diaper bag items but they are part of the same plan. Southwest publishes one free stroller and one free car seat per ticketed customer, checkable at the curb, counter or gate — and that is usually the free capacity families under-use.
