Carry-On Stroller Size Guide: Dimensions vs Limits

The short answer

United publishes a carry-on maximum of 22 x 14 x 9 in. American publishes that a fully collapsible stroller under 20 lb may be carried on if it fits an overhead bin. Practically that means a stroller under about 9 in thick folded — which today is the Stokke YOYO³ (7.1 in), the Cybex Libelle 2 (7.8 in) and the gb Pockit+ All-City (20 cm).

Read it by the smallest axis

An overhead bin is shallow, wide and curved at the top. A folded stroller goes in lying on its side, so the number that decides whether the lid closes is the stroller’s thickness — not its length and not its volume. United’s published depth limit is 9 in (united.com, read 2026-09-27).

What each airline publishes

American is the clearest: you may carry on a fully collapsible stroller if it is under 20 lb and fits in an overhead bin; otherwise strollers are checked at the gate before boarding and collected at the gate afterwards, free of charge when traveling with a child (aa.com, read 2026-09-27).

United publishes a 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on maximum and states that in addition to one carry-on and one personal item you may bring additional items including FAA-approved child restraint systems (united.com, read 2026-09-27). Its family-travel page renders its detail with JavaScript and we could not read it — so we are not reporting a United stroller-specific rule we could not verify.

Southwest approaches it from the other direction: one stroller and one car seat free per ticketed customer, checkable at the curb, ticket counter or gate, with gate-checked items claimed at baggage claim at the final destination (southwest.com, read 2026-09-27). Note the detail about baggage claim — it means a gate-checked stroller on Southwest may not be waiting for you at the arrival gate.

Three practical notes

Published dimensions exclude the carry bag. Add a little in every axis for it.

Board early if you can. Bin space is finite and a stroller needs a lot of it. Family pre-boarding is the difference between using a bin and being told to gate-check.

Do stroller dimensions include the wheels?

Published folded dimensions are for the stroller as folded, wheels included. What they do not include is a carry bag, which adds a little in every axis — worth remembering if you are within half an inch of a limit.

Will the gate agent measure it?

Usually not. What happens is that you try to put it in a bin and either it fits or it does not, and if it does not you walk it back to the door. That is why margin matters more than technically complying.
