A travel crib is judged on two numbers and nothing else: what it weighs and what it collapses to. Set-up dimensions matter a little, mattress quality matters for how the baby sleeps, and everything else on a spec sheet is noise. Packed volume versus packed shape
Two cribs can have the same volume and be completely different to travel with. The Chicco Alfa Lite collapses to 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in — the smallest volume here — but it is a fat cylinder. The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light folds to 23.5 x 19 x 5.5 in, a bigger volume but a flat slab that slides down the side of a suitcase or into the gap behind a car seat.
Which you want depends on how you are moving it. Flying with a checked bag: the flat slab, every time, because it packs alongside things rather than displacing them. Car trip with the trunk already full: also the flat slab. Walking any distance at all: neither — the Guava Lotus, because it is the only one with backpack straps, and a 15 lb crib on your back is easier than a 13 lb one on one shoulder.
The mattress is the spec people skip
A travel crib is a sleep surface, and the mattress determines whether your child sleeps on it. Guava publishes a 41.5 x 23.5 x 1.4 in low-VOC insulated mattress; Newton publishes a Wovenaire breathe-thru core that is washable from cover to core; BabyBjörn publishes 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in. Play yards like the Alfa Lite and the Graco ship with a thinner pad over a fabric floor, which is firm — as it should be — but thinner.
The one thing not to do is add a softer mattress. The AAP is explicit that infants should be placed on a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface covered by a fitted sheet with no other bedding or soft objects (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27). What we’d skip
Inflatable travel “cribs” for infants. An inflatable surface is not a firm flat sleep surface, and inflatable bumpers are exactly the soft objects the AAP's guidance says to keep out of an infant sleep space. Inflatable beds have a real place for toddlers who are out of a crib — see our toddler travel bed page — and no place for a baby.
Aftermarket mattress toppers. Sold widely for exactly these cribs, and contrary to the safe sleep guidance every one of these manufacturers is building to.
Cribs with no published packed dimensions. If a listing will not tell you what it folds to, the answer is usually that it does not fold well.
Full-size play yards, for flying. The Newton Deluxe is on this list because it is genuinely the best choice for a second home. It is the wrong purchase if the plan involves an airport.

What is the lightest travel crib?
Of the cribs we compared, the Newton Baby Compact Travel Crib at a published 12 lb, followed by the Chicco Alfa Lite at 12.5 lb and the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light at 13 lb including its carry bag. Read carefully: some brands publish crib weight and others publish crib plus bag, and the difference is a pound or two.
Can a travel crib go in the overhead bin?
No. Even the smallest here — the Chicco Alfa Lite at 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in — exceeds standard carry-on dimensions in length. Travel cribs are checked baggage. Southwest, for example, publishes that portable cribs and pack-and-plays are treated as regular baggage rather than falling under the free stroller and car seat allowance.
Are travel cribs safe for overnight sleep?
A play yard or travel crib that conforms to CPSC's play yard standard, used with the firm flat mattress it shipped with and a fitted sheet and nothing else, is one of the sleep surfaces the AAP names as appropriate. Do I need a travel crib if hotels provide cribs?
Many hotels do provide a crib on request, but availability is not guaranteed and the condition varies. If you are staying in one hotel for several nights, asking is reasonable. If you are moving between places, or staying with family, bring your own.
How long does a child fit in a travel crib?
Guava publishes newborn to three, or until the child can climb out — which is the honest formulation, because climbing out is what ends it rather than a measurement. CPSC defines play yards as being for a child under 35 in in height who cannot climb out.
