“Most comfortable” in this category means the mattress, and the mattress is the spec brands are vaguest about. Below are the published figures — thickness, construction and surface size — for five options, plus one product that is not a mattress at all and probably does more for sleep than any of them.
One thing to get straight first, because it reverses the instinct: a travel crib mattress that feels thin to you is the correct firmness. The AAP specifies a firm, flat, non-inclined surface for infant sleep (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27). Comfort here is not softness. It is a mattress that fits the frame with no gap at the edges, breathes, and insulates the child from a cold floor.

Three tenths of an inch, and what it buys
The spread from 1.2 in to 1.5 in sounds trivial and is the whole difference in this category. At the top end, Newton’s 1.5 in Wovenaire core is a structured, air-permeable slab you can put through a machine. At 1.4 in, Guava trades some of that for insulation — the only mattress here specified as insulating from the floor, which is a real consideration on tile, on a rental’s bare boards, or in a hotel room where the floor is colder than the air. At 1.2 in, BabyBjörn is the thinnest, and uses the space it saves to fold to 5.5 in.
The one that matters after the fact is washability. Newton publishes a mattress washable from cover to core; nobody else here makes that claim. You will need it exactly once, and then permanently. Our Lotus versus Newton comparison works through that trade directly.
What we’d skip
Aftermarket mattress toppers, at any thickness. They make the surface softer, which is the hazard the standard exists to prevent, and they leave a gap at the edges.
Inflatable sleep surfaces for infants. Not firm, not flat, and not an infant sleep surface. They are legitimate for toddlers out of a crib — see toddler travel beds.
Cribs that publish no mattress dimension. In a page about comfort, a brand that will not state the thickness is not giving you the one number that matters.

Are travel crib mattresses too thin?
They feel thin to an adult and that is correct. The AAP specifies a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface for infants — softness is the hazard, not the goal. Published thicknesses here run 1.2 to 1.5 in, and all of them are appropriate. What is not appropriate is adding a topper to make it softer.
Can I make a travel crib more comfortable?
Not by adding padding. What you can legitimately change is the room: darkness, temperature and a familiar bedtime routine. A wearable sleep sack handles a cold room without putting anything loose in the crib, and a blackout tent handles a bright one.
Which travel crib has the biggest sleep surface?
Of the compact cribs, the Guava Lotus at 41.5 x 23.5 in, just ahead of the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light's 23.5 x 41 in. The Newton Deluxe is far larger at 51 x 35 in overall but is not a crib you fly with.
Does a breathable mattress actually matter?
Newton publishes a Wovenaire breathe-thru core and GREENGUARD Gold certification, which are claims about air flow through the core and about low chemical emissions respectively. They are two separate things. Neither replaces the safe sleep basics — back sleeping, firm flat surface, nothing else in the crib.
