Travel Crib Mattress

The pad that comes with the crib feels too thin. It is supposed to. Here is what each brand publishes, and why adding a softer one is the wrong fix.

The short answer

Use the mattress your crib came with, and buy a fitted sheet sized to it. There is no standard travel crib mattress size: Guava publishes 41.5 x 23.5 x 1.4 in, BabyBjörn 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in, Newton 38 x 24 x 1.5 in for the Compact and a 48 x 34 in surface for the Deluxe. Do not add a thicker or softer pad: the AAP’s 2022 recommendations are for a firm, flat sleep surface, and an added mattress changes the surface the crib was tested with.

Quoted from each brand's own page as cited under Sources, read 2026-09-27 or later. "Not published" means the figure is absent from the page we read. Measure your own crib before buying a sheet — we are not going to infer a dimension from a frame size.

Note what that table does to the idea of a universal travel crib sheet. Four cribs, four different surfaces, ranging from 23.5 x 41 in to 48 x 34 in. A sheet sized for one of them does not fit another, and a standard full-size crib sheet fits none of them.

Thin is the specification, not a saving

Every parent has the same reaction to a travel crib mattress: this is a mat, not a mattress. 1.2 in on the BabyBjörn, 1.4 in on the Lotus, 1.5 in on the Newton Compact — over a hotel floor, against the mattress you sleep on yourself, it feels like nothing.

That is correct. The AAP’s 2022 recommendations are for a firm, flat sleep surface for infants (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27; see also HealthyChildren.org, read 2026-09-27). Firmness that feels unkind to an adult hip is the appropriate surface for a baby, and a travel crib’s pad is thin because its job is to sit on a hard floor without introducing softness.

Newton makes the point in its own construction figures: the Wovenaire core is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, and it is the thickest pad in our registry at 1.5 in. Air, not foam. Our most comfortable travel cribs page ranks the category on this spec and reaches the same conclusion from the other direction.

What to do about cold floors

This is the legitimate version of the “can I add something” question, and it has a real answer: buy a crib whose mattress is already insulated rather than insulating one that is not.

Guava publishes the Lotus mattress as low-VOC and insulated — the only pad in our registry that publishes insulation as a property (guavafamily.com, read 2026-09-27). On a tiled hotel floor, a wooden cabin floor or a camping trip, that is the spec that does the work, and it is why the Lotus wins our travel cribs for camping page.

If you already own something else: dress the child warmer rather than the crib. A sleep sack is inside the guidance and a blanket under the mattress is not a thing worth experimenting with.

Cleaning, which is the real reason people search for this

A travel crib mattress gets everything. The relevant published difference is simple: Newton’s core goes in a washing machine and nobody else’s does. Newton publishes the Compact’s cover and core as machine washable cold on a gentle cycle, and the Deluxe’s core as fully washable (newtonbaby.com, read 2026-10-01).

For a wipe-clean pad — the Lotus, the BabyBjörn, the Graco — the practical equivalent is a waterproof fitted sheet sized to the published mattress dimension, carried in duplicate. One on the crib, one in the bag. That is a cheaper fix than a new crib and it solves the 2am version of the problem, which a washing machine three time zones away does not.

The honest caveat on the Newton: a washed core needs real drying time. Mid-trip, a spare sheet still beats a washing machine.

Sheets, sized properly

Buy to the published mattress dimension, not to the crib model name, and not to “travel crib” as a category. Newton includes a muslin cotton fitted sheet with the Compact and sells one separately for the Deluxe, which is worth knowing before you order the more expensive crib and discover the sheet is extra — see the Newton play yard page for what is in each box.

A sheet that is too large is not a laundry annoyance, it is loose fabric in a sleep space. Get the dimension right or use the one the manufacturer supplies, and keep everything else — pillows, bumpers, toys, loose blankets — out of the crib entirely.

Good at

  • Core and cover both machine washable cold on a gentle cycle
  • 38 x 24 x 1.5 in — the thickest published pad in our registry
  • Wovenaire construction: 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer
  • Muslin cotton fitted sheet included, so the sizing problem is solved in the box
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified

Bad at

Washable is not the same as fast: a core that has been through a machine needs real drying time, which is a problem mid-trip rather than at home. And the 47 x 34 x 27 in frame around that 38 x 24 in pad is the largest footprint per inch of mattress in our registry.

Specs from Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib product page, read 2026-09-27. Manufacturers revise specs without notice — check the listing before you buy.

Good at

  • Published 41.5 x 23.5 x 1.4 in, so a fitted sheet can be bought to size in advance
  • Low-VOC and insulated — the insulation is the spec that matters on a cold floor
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified crib
  • Sits inside a 45.5 x 31.5 in frame, a better surface-to-footprint ratio than the Newton Compact

Bad at

It is a wipe-clean pad, not a washable one — Guava publishes no machine-washable core. And at 1.4 in it is marginally thinner than the Newton's 1.5 in, which nobody will feel but which is what the published numbers say.

3Best surface-to-footprint ratio

BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

A 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in mattress inside a 32 x 44 in frame — the least wasted floor of any crib in our registry, in a crib that folds to 5.5 in thick.

Best for: A small room, where every inch of floor the crib does not use is yours

Good at

  • 23.5 x 41 in of mattress inside a 32 x 44 in frame — very little wasted perimeter
  • Folds to 23.5 x 19 x 5.5 in, the flattest fold in the category
  • 13 lb including the carry bag

Bad at

1.2 in is the thinnest published pad here, and BabyBjörn publishes no insulation property and no washable core. On a cold floor the Lotus is the better pad; for cleaning, the Newton is.

Questions parents actually ask

What size is a travel crib mattress?

There is no standard size — each crib publishes its own. Guava publishes 41.5 x 23.5 x 1.4 in for the Lotus, BabyBjörn 23.5 x 41 x 1.2 in for the Travel Crib Light, Newton 38 x 24 x 1.5 in for the Compact and a 48 x 34 in surface for the Deluxe, and Graco a 27 x 36 in mattress pad for the Day2Dream. Measure or look up your own model before buying anything.

Can I add a mattress to a travel crib?

Not a softer or thicker one. The AAP's 2022 safe sleep recommendations are for a firm, flat sleep surface, and an added pad changes the surface the crib was tested with and can create a gap at the edges. Use the mattress the manufacturer supplies, with a fitted sheet sized for it and nothing else in the crib.

Why is the travel crib mattress so thin?

Because firm is correct and soft is not. A 1.2 to 1.5 in pad over a floor feels thin to an adult and is the appropriate firmness for an infant. Newton's figures make the point: its pad is 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, and it is the thickest in our registry at 1.5 in.

What sheets fit a travel crib?

Sheets sized for that specific crib. Newton includes a muslin cotton fitted sheet with the Compact and sells one separately for the Deluxe; for the Lotus and the BabyBjörn you are buying to the published mattress dimension. A standard crib sheet is too big and the loose fabric is the hazard, not the inconvenience.

Can I wash a travel crib mattress?

Only if the brand says so. Newton publishes its Wovenaire core and cover as machine washable cold on a gentle cycle for the Compact and a fully washable core for the Deluxe. Guava and BabyBjörn publish wipe-clean pads, not washable ones — so for those, a waterproof fitted sheet you can launder is the practical answer.
