A crib that lives at a grandparents’ house is solving a different problem from one you fly with. It gets carried from a closet to a bedroom once and then stays. That frees you to optimize for the things that actually matter in that context: how much room the child has, whether someone who did not read the manual can open it, and whether it covers the newborn stage as well as the toddler one. Stop optimizing for weight
The compact travel cribs — 12 to 15 lb, folding to about the size of a golf bag — charge a premium for portability and pay for it in floor space. The Newton Deluxe is 51 x 35 x 29 in set up against 43.2 x 29.5 in for its own compact sibling. That is a meaningfully bigger space for a child who is going to spend a hundred nights in it over three years, and the 17 lb weight penalty is paid exactly once.

Setup is a person problem, not a product problem
The crib will be opened by someone who was not there when it was bought, possibly a decade since they last handled baby gear, probably while holding the baby. 4moms publishes a one-push open and one-pull close, and that single feature is worth more in this context than any amount of mattress technology. Whatever you choose, open and close it twice with the person who will be using it before you leave.
What we’d skip
Buying the lightest crib for a house it will never leave. You are paying a portability premium in floor space for a benefit you will use once.
A bassinet-only product as the whole answer. The Baby Delight is excellent and it is finished at 20 lb or five months. It is a companion to a crib, not a replacement.
Second-hand play yards of unknown age. CPSC's play yard rule at 16 CFR part 1221 incorporates ASTM F406, and the version in force has been revised over the years. A crib from a garage of unknown vintage cannot be checked against it, and recalls in this category are real.

What is the difference between a pack and play and a travel crib?
A play yard is a framed enclosure with a floor and mesh sides, intended for play as well as sleep, and it is what CPSC regulates under 16 CFR part 1221. A travel crib is the subset designed primarily to pack small and be carried. In practice, pack-and-plays are roomier and heavier; travel cribs fold smaller and cost more per square inch of sleep space.
How long will a child use a pack and play at a grandparents' house?
CPSC defines a play yard as being for a child who cannot climb out and is under 35 in in height, which for most children means somewhere around two to three years. Guava's formulation — newborn to three, or until the child can climb out — is the honest version: climbing ends it, not a measurement.
Is a bassinet insert worth it?
For a newborn visiting regularly, yes: a bassinet raises the sleep surface to a height an adult can reach into without bending into a deep playard, which matters a great deal at 3am. Note the limits, though — 4moms publishes 18 lb for its bassinet and Baby Delight 20 lb or five months. Both arrive faster than you expect.
Can it stay set up all the time?
Yes, and for a grandparents' house that is usually the point. Just keep to the safe sleep rules while it is up: firm flat mattress it came with, fitted sheet, nothing else in it, and no soft toppers added for comfort.
