The two-bag alternative nobody suggests
If two adults are traveling, one bag each is usually better than one extra-large bag. It splits the weight, it means each adult is self-sufficient if you get separated at a gate or a security lane, and two mid-sized bags are far more likely to fit under seats than one 12-inch-deep one. The extra-large-bag case is genuinely strong when one adult regularly handles both children alone, and weak otherwise.
The depth problem gets worse with two
More contents means a fuller bag, and a full bag is deeper than an empty one. United publishes a carry-on maximum of 22 x 14 x 9 in with one personal item in addition (united.com, read 2026-09-27); personal item allowances are tighter still. Do I need a bigger diaper bag for two children?

Two adults traveling together are often better with one bag each — it splits the weight and means neither is helpless if they get separated. One extra-large bag makes sense when one adult is regularly handling both children alone.
Will an extra-large diaper bag still fit under a seat?
Frequently not, and depth is why. A bag 12 in deep packed full will not slide into many under-seat spaces. If the bag is your personal item, check the depth figure against your airline's published personal item dimensions before you rely on it.
What extra thing should I pack for two?
