A travel crib is designed around a hotel room: flat floor, mains power nearby, room temperature held by someone else. Camping removes all three. That changes which specs matter — carry method over rough ground, insulation from below, and whether the thing can be set up without electricity.

Cold comes from below
This is the part people get wrong. Air temperature in a tent is uncomfortable; the ground is what actually pulls heat out of a sleeping child, and it does it all night. Two ways to deal with it. Get the child off the ground — a cot at 9 in or an inflatable bed at 12 in does that mechanically. Or insulate the surface, which is why the Guava Lotus’s low-VOC insulated mattress is the spec worth paying for here when a crib is what you need.
What you should not do is solve it with bedding. The AAP’s recommendation is a firm flat surface with a fitted sheet and no other bedding or soft objects (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27), and that does not relax because you are outdoors. A wearable sleep sack and a closed-cell mat under the crib solve the same problem without putting anything loose in the sleep space.

Putting a crib on an unlevelled pitch. Level the ground, or move. Do not shim.

Can a baby sleep in a travel crib while camping?
Yes — the safe sleep rules do not change outdoors. A play yard or travel crib conforming to CPSC's standard, used with the firm flat mattress it shipped with, a fitted sheet and nothing else, is an appropriate sleep surface wherever it is standing. What changes is temperature: a cold floor pulls heat out of a crib, which is a clothing and insulation problem, not a bedding one.
How do I keep a baby warm in a tent?
Insulate underneath and dress in layers, rather than adding anything loose to the crib. A crib with an insulated mattress, or a closed-cell foam mat under the crib's footprint, addresses the cold coming from below. A wearable sleep sack handles the air temperature without putting a blanket in the sleep space.
Do I need a crib at all for camping?
For an infant, you need a defined sleep surface and a tent floor with adult bedding is not one. For a toddler already out of a crib, a low cot or an inflatable bed with bumpers is usually the better answer — lighter, smaller packed, and it lifts them off the ground.
What about uneven ground?
Level the pitch before the crib goes up, not after. Every crib here assumes a flat floor, and a frame on a slope puts the child at an incline — which the AAP's guidance specifically warns against above 10 degrees. If you cannot get it level, move the crib rather than shimming it.
