Newton Travel Crib Review
A washable mattress is the reason to buy one of these. Newton's own published figures are the reason to read carefully before you do.

The short answer
Buy the Newton Compact. It is the only travel crib we have compared whose mattress core — not just the cover — goes in a washing machine, it folds to 24 x 10 x 10 in, and it now publishes a side zip door and backpack straps. Buy the Deluxe only if the crib will live in one room, where its 48 x 34 in sleep surface is worth the 17 lb and the 35 in fold.
There is one reason to buy a Newton over anything else in this category, and it is not the frame. It is the mattress: a Wovenaire core that Newton publishes as 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, with the cover and the core machine washable cold on a gentle cycle. Every other travel crib we have compared gives you a washable cover at best. You will need the difference exactly once — one stomach bug, in a rental, at 2am — and then permanently.
This review covers both models and the choice between them, because that is the decision Newton’s own pages make hardest. It also flags two places where Newton’s published figures contradict each other, which we would rather tell you than quietly pick a number.

The mattress is the product
A 38 x 24 x 1.5 in sleep surface is the thickest published travel crib mattress in our comparison set — the Guava Lotus publishes 1.4 in and the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light 1.2 in. But thickness is the less interesting number here, because 1.5 in is still firm, and firm is what an infant mattress is supposed to be.
The interesting number is the construction. Newton describes unzipping the outer cover, washing it cold on a delicate setting, and washing the core as well. Nobody else in this category makes that claim, and it is the entire argument for the brand. Our mattress specs comparison puts the published figures side by side if you want to see how little separates the rest.
One thing worth stating plainly, because the marketing invites the opposite conclusion: a breathable core and a GREENGUARD Gold certificate are two separate claims, and neither replaces the safe sleep basics. The AAP specifies a firm, flat, non-inclined surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27). Newton also cites independent accredited-lab testing that among bestselling play yards only Newton does not pose a significant suffocation risk — that is Newton’s description of a test we have not seen, and we report it as the brand’s claim rather than as a finding.
What changed, and when we noticed
We first read Newton’s pages on 2026-09-27 and re-read them on 2026-10-01 to write this review. Three things are different.
The Compact now publishes a side zip door and a travel bag with hidden shoulder straps that convert it to a backpack, plus a luggage sleeve. Those were the two features that distinguished the Guava Lotus in this category, and the Newton now states both. Our Lotus versus Newton comparison was written against the earlier spec sheet and we are reviewing it against this change — if it still reads as though only the Lotus has those features, that page is behind this one.
The published set-up size also grew, from 43.2 x 29.5 x 23.2 in to 47 x 34 x 27 in. Every figure on this site that quoted the old number has been updated.

The sleep surface line is the decision. 48 x 34 in is roughly 1,630 square inches against the Compact’s 912 — not a bit bigger, close to double. For a child who will use the same crib from newborn to three in one room, that is the right purchase and the 17 lb is irrelevant.
The folded line is the counter-argument. 35 x 12.5 x 11 in is not going in an overhead bin and it is awkward in a car trunk full of other things. The Compact’s 24 x 10 x 10 in is the whole reason the brand is in a travel-crib conversation at all — see our travel cribs for flying roundup for how that compares against the field.
The quiet third factor is what is in the box. The Compact includes a fitted sheet; the Deluxe does not, and its bassinet is a separate purchase too. On the more expensive crib, that is the kind of detail that turns a $100 gap into something larger.
Where a Newton is the wrong crib
If you need the smallest possible packed size. 24 x 10 x 10 in is good and the Chicco Alfa Lite publishes 21 x 9.5 x 9.5 in, and the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light folds to 5.5 in thick, which slides into a suitcase in a way a 10 in square tube does not.
If you want a bassinet stage and a changing station in one frame. That is a full-size playard, not this. Newton sells the Deluxe bassinet separately and publishes no changer at all — our pack ’n play page covers the frames that do all three jobs with published limits for each.
If the published specs need to be dependable. Two conflicting weights and two conflicting set-up sizes on one product page is not a safety problem, but it is a reason to measure your own space rather than trust the listing.
What we’d skip
Adding a topper to the Wovenaire mattress. It is 1.5 in and firm because that is correct. Softening an infant sleep surface is the hazard the standard exists to prevent — full detail in our travel crib safety guide.
Buying the Deluxe to fly with. 17 lb and a 35 in fold. If it is going on a plane, buy the Compact.
Assuming the Compact is a guaranteed carry-on. Newton says “most airplane overhead bins.” At 24 in long it is over the common 22 in carry-on length limit. Check your airline.
Buying the Deluxe without pricing the sheet and the bassinet. Both are sold separately, on the $299.99 model.

Every pick in full
Newton Baby Compact Travel Crib & Play Yard
A mattress washable from cover to core in a crib that folds to 24 x 10 x 10 in — now with a side zip door and backpack straps, which it did not publish a few days ago.
Best for: A crib that flies, and a mattress you can wash
| Set up | 47 x 34 x 27 in (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Sleep surface | 38 x 24 x 1.5 in |
| Collapsed | 24 x 10 x 10 in (L x W x H) |

Good at
- Wovenaire breathe-thru core — 90% air, 10% food-grade polymer — with cover AND core machine washable cold on a gentle cycle
- Folds to 24 x 10 x 10 in; Newton states it fits most airplane overhead bins
- Side zip door, so a sleeping child goes in at floor level rather than over a rail
- Travel bag includes a carry handle, hidden shoulder straps that convert it to a backpack, and a luggage sleeve
- Muslin cotton fitted sheet included; GREENGUARD Gold certified
- 38 x 24 x 1.5 in sleep surface — the thickest published travel crib mattress we have compared
Bad at
Newton publishes two conflicting weights for this crib — 12 lb in its FAQ and 13 lb in its key features — and two different set-up sizes, 47 x 34 x 27 in in the spec list against 37.75 x 24.5 x 27 in on its own labeled dimension image. At a $199.99 list price, being unable to pin down what it weighs or how much floor it takes is a fair thing to hold against it.

IllustrativeNewton Baby Deluxe Travel Crib & Play Yard

Specs from Newton Baby Deluxe Travel Crib product page, read 2026-10-01. Manufacturers revise specs without notice — check the listing before you buy.
Good at
- 48 x 34 in sleep surface in a 49.5 x 35 x 28 in frame — the most room of any travel crib or play yard we have compared
- Same fully washable Wovenaire breathe-thru core
- Breathable mesh walls on a steel frame; GREENGUARD Gold certified
- Folds to 35 x 12.5 x 11 in with a travel bag included
Bad at
17 lb, a 35 in folded length that will not go in an overhead bin, no side door published, and the sheet and the bassinet are both sold separately — on a $299.99 crib. This is a play yard that can travel, not a travel crib.
How it scores (out of 10)

IllustrativeQuestions parents actually ask
How much does the Newton Compact travel crib weigh?
Newton publishes two different answers on the same page, which is worth knowing before you plan a checked bag around it: 12 lb in its FAQ section and 13 lb in its key features, where it is described as the lightest in its class. Either figure makes it lighter than the Guava Lotus at 15 lb with its bag; we quote both rather than choosing one.
Is the Newton travel crib carry-on size?
Newton states the Compact fits in most airplane overhead bins, and at 24 x 10 x 10 in folded that is plausible against a common 22 x 14 x 9 in limit on length but over it on depth. Treat it as a bin-sized bag rather than a guaranteed carry-on, and check your airline's published dimensions. The Deluxe folds to 35 x 12.5 x 11 in and is checked baggage.
What is a Wovenaire mattress?
Newton's patented core, which it publishes as 90% air and 10% food-grade polymer, designed so air passes through it. The practical consequence is the part that matters: both the cover and the core are machine washable cold on a gentle cycle. No other travel crib in our comparison set publishes a core you can wash.
Does the Newton travel crib have a weight limit?
Newton states there is no weight limit because the mattress rests directly on the floor, and gives the limit as a height instead — suitable for babies and toddlers up to 35 in tall. That matches how CPSC frames a play yard: the real limit is a child who can climb out.
Compact or Deluxe?
Compact if it will ever go through an airport — it folds to 24 x 10 x 10 in and has backpack straps and a side door. Deluxe if it will live in one room, where the 48 x 34 in sleep surface is more than double the floor area for a child who will use it for years. The Deluxe's 35 in folded length rules out a bin.
Is the sheet included?
On the Compact, yes — Newton lists a muslin cotton fitted sheet as included. On the Deluxe, no: the cotton muslin floor-mattress sheet is sold separately, and so is the bassinet attachment. On a crib listing at $299.99 that is worth budgeting for.
Is the Newton mattress safe for a newborn?
It is a firm, flat, 1.5 in mattress sized to its own frame, which is what the safe sleep guidance asks for — the AAP specifies a firm, flat, non-inclined surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib. Newton cites independent accredited-lab testing on suffocation risk; that is Newton's claim about a test we have not seen, not our finding. This page is informational and not medical advice.
