“For moms” is a shopping term rather than a specification, and pretending otherwise produces a page about colors. What it usually resolves to in practice is three things: a bag that does not weigh much before you fill it, a carry style that suits your body and your day, and enough room for your own things rather than only the baby’s. All three are published specs, so that is what this page compares.

Empty weight is the spec nobody reads
From 1.4 lb to 4.54 lb. That is a spread of more than three pounds of bag, before a single diaper goes in, and you are frequently also carrying a child. The Skip Hop Forma at 1.4 lb and the Ruvalino at 1.78 lb are in a different class here from the Itzy Ritzy at 3.1 lb and the BÉIS at 4.54 lb.
That does not make the heavy ones wrong. The BÉIS carries two laptop sizes and has properly dedicated wipes and diaper pockets; the Itzy Ritzy has 19 of them. You are buying structure, and structure has mass. But it should be a decision, not a surprise — and note that two bags here publish no empty weight at all, which in a category where the spread is three pounds is a meaningful omission.
Room for your things, not just the baby’s
This is the axis that separates a diaper bag from a good diaper bag. A bag you can also take to work, or carry as your only bag for a day, needs somewhere for a laptop that is not pressed against a bottle. What we’d skip
Bags that publish no empty weight. In a category with a three-pound spread, a brand that will not state it is hiding the number you will feel most.
A tote as your only bag, if your days are long. One shoulder carrying eight pounds for six hours is a real cost. Keep the tote for short trips — see diaper backpack versus tote.
Buying for the largest day you can imagine. The bag you actually carry is the one that is not annoying, and a 25 L bag packed a third full is just a big bag.
Paying for a bottle warmer pocket. None of the insulated pockets above heat anything; they hold a temperature for a while. That is worth having and it is not what a warmer does.

What size diaper bag do I actually need?
Published capacities here run from 946 cubic inches to 25 L, and the honest answer is that most parents over-buy. A day out with one baby needs diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, two bottles and snacks. The reason to size up is a second child or a full day of travel, not a trip to the park.
Backpack or tote?
Backpack, for anything longer than an hour — two shoulders carry a load far better than one, and you keep both hands free. A tote is better for short in-and-out trips and for reaching into a car without taking the bag off. We compare the two carry styles within one product family so the shape is the only variable.
Does the diaper bag count as a carry-on?
It depends on the airline, and the rules are more generous than people expect — several US carriers let a diaper bag travel in addition to your carry-on and personal item when you are flying with an infant. We keep the airline-by-airline detail on a page of its own because it changes.
How much does an empty diaper bag weigh?
Between 1.4 lb and 4.54 lb among the bags here — a spread of more than three pounds before anything goes in it. That is the most under-read spec in the category, and on a day when you are also carrying a child it is the one you feel.
Do I need a designated diaper bag at all?
No. What you need is a bag with a wipe-clean lining, a place for bottles that is not next to a laptop, and somewhere to put a changing pad. Plenty of ordinary backpacks do that. What a diaper bag buys you is the organization already done and the changing pad in the box.
