Travel Bassinet or Crib?

A bassinet is easier to carry and finishes in five months. A crib is heavier and lasts three years. For most households that is the whole decision.

The short answer

Buy the crib. A portable bassinet is a better newborn experience and a much shorter purchase: Baby Delight publishes up to 5 months or 20 lb for the Slumber Deluxe, while Newton publishes its travel cribs for children up to 35 in tall and Guava publishes the Lotus for newborn to three. Unless the newborn months are the only travel you are planning, the bassinet is a second purchase you make first.

The published windows are not close

This decision looks like a comfort question and it is really an arithmetic one. Put the published limits next to each other and the gap is years.

Quoted from each brand's own page as cited under Sources, read 2026-09-27 or later. "Not published" means absent from the page we read. Bassinet limits are always the lowest figure on a multi-mode product — read that number first.

Five months against three years. 20 lb against no stated weight limit. Whatever else is true about these two product shapes, one of them is a purchase you make once and the other is a purchase you make twice.

What the bassinet genuinely does better

Three things, and they are not trivial in the first eight weeks.

Height. The Slumber Deluxe stands 22.5 in tall, which puts the sleep surface at a level you can reach into from a bed without standing up. A travel crib puts it on the floor. At 3am, with a newborn feeding every two hours, that is the difference between leaning and getting up, repeatedly, for a week.

Footprint. 33 x 18 in against the Newton Compact’s 47 x 34 in. In a hotel room with one armchair and a radiator, that is often the difference between a product that fits beside the bed and one that goes where there is space.

Rocking. No travel crib rocks. Baby Delight publishes the Slumber Deluxe as a rocking bassinet, and it is JPMA certified. If rocking is what settles your baby, that is a real feature a crib cannot be talked into.

What the crib does better, which is everything after May

A travel crib bought for a newborn is still in use at two years. Newton publishes up to 35 in tall for both of its sizes, with no weight limit stated because the mattress rests directly on the floor rather than on a suspended platform. Guava publishes newborn to three, or until the child can climb out.

The crib also wins the practical newborn specs that are not about reach. Newton’s Wovenaire core is machine washable cold on a gentle cycle, cover and core — which, in the months when sleep and laundry are the same problem, is worth more than rocking. Guava’s Lotus mattress is insulated, which matters on a cold floor. Our travel crib mattress guidecovers both.

And it carries better than its size suggests: Newton’s bag has hidden shoulder straps and a luggage sleeve, and the Lotus has padded backpack straps at 15 lb. A 12 lb bassinet with a single handle is not obviously easier to move through an airport than a 15 lb crib on your back.

The one case for buying the bassinet first

If all of the travel you have planned happens inside the first five months — a maternity-leave trip to family, a wedding, two weekends away — then the bassinet is the right purchase and the crib can wait until you need it. You will use the product for its whole published life, which is the only situation in which a five-month window is not a problem.

The other case is cost, honestly. Nothing on this page carries a price we can verify through a live feed, so check the current listing before you decide; our how we pick page explains why this site does not print prices it cannot verify.

Or buy the one product that does both

The Graco Day2Dream is a playard with a separate portable travel bassinet and a published 27 x 36 in mattress pad. On paper that resolves the whole page: bassinet months and playard years, one box.

The caveat is that Graco publishes neither limit on the page we read — no bassinet weight limit, no playard limit. For a product whose entire proposition is two modes, those are the two numbers that matter, and we are not going to supply them from a comparable product. Read the manual or the box before you buy it for the bassinet. The travel bassinet roundup covers the dedicated bassinets, and travel crib versus pack and play covers the two crib shapes.

Whichever you buy, the sleep surface rules are the same

Firm, flat, nothing loose in the sleep space, and inside the limits the manufacturer publishes. The AAP’s 2022 recommendations are the reference (publications.aap.org, read 2026-09-27), and they do not change because the product is portable or because you are in a hotel. Our are travel bassinets safe page goes through the bassinet-specific version of this, and travel crib safety the crib version. Informational, not medical advice.

Good at

  • Published up to 35 in tall with no weight limit, so it covers a newborn and a two-year-old
  • Machine washable Wovenaire core and cover — the spec that matters most in the newborn months
  • Collapses to 24 x 10 x 10 in; bag has hidden shoulder straps and a luggage sleeve
  • Side zip door, muslin fitted sheet included, GREENGUARD Gold
  • $199.99 at newtonbaby.com, read 2026-10-01

Bad at

A 47 x 34 x 27 in frame is a lot of hotel floor for a newborn who occupies a 38 x 24 in patch of it, and a crib is a worse 3am proposition than a bassinet you can reach into from a bed. If the trip is three nights, that footprint is the price of buying once.

2Best bassinet, with a known end date

Baby Delight Go With Me Slumber Deluxe Portable Rocking Bassinet

A JPMA certified portable rocking bassinet published up to five months or 20 lb, 33 x 18 x 22.5 in at 12 lb — low, close and finished by about half a year.

Specs from Baby Delight Slumber Deluxe Portable Rocking Bassinet product page, read 2026-09-27. Manufacturers revise specs without notice — check the listing before you buy.

Good at

  • Published up to 5 months or 20 lb, which is an honest window rather than a vague one
  • JPMA certified
  • 33 x 18 x 22.5 in — a small footprint next to a bed in a hotel room
  • 12 lb, and it rocks, which is the feature a crib cannot offer

Bad at

Five months or 20 lb, whichever comes first. That is the entire objection: you will buy a crib afterwards anyway, so unless the newborn months are the only travel you are planning, this is a second purchase rather than a first one.

3Both, in one box

Graco Pack 'n Play Day2Dream Travel Bassinet Playard

A playard with a separate portable travel bassinet and a 27 x 36 in mattress pad — the one product here that does not make you choose.

Best for: A household that wants the bassinet months and the playard years from one purchase

Graco Pack 'n Play Day2Dream Travel Bassinet Playard published specs

Modesplayard plus a separate portable travel bassinet

Specs from Graco Pack 'n Play Day2Dream product page, read 2026-09-27. Manufacturers revise specs without notice — check the listing before you buy.

Good at

  • Playard plus a separate portable travel bassinet, so the newborn months and the months after are both covered
  • 27 x 36 in mattress pad
  • A single purchase rather than a bassinet now and a crib in May

Bad at

Graco publishes neither a bassinet weight limit nor a playard limit on the page we read, and a bassinet limit is the single most important number on a product like this. Expect something in the 15-20 lb range on the basis of what comparable playards publish, and check the box or the manual rather than trusting that sentence.

Questions parents actually ask

Do I need a travel bassinet or a travel crib for a newborn?

A crib, in most cases. Travel cribs are published for the whole span — Newton publishes up to 35 in tall for its cribs and Guava publishes newborn to three for the Lotus — whereas portable bassinets end early: the Baby Delight Slumber Deluxe publishes up to five months or 20 lb. A bassinet is a better newborn experience and a worse single purchase.

What is the weight limit on a travel bassinet?

About 20 lb, and sometimes less. Baby Delight publishes up to 5 months or 20 lb for the Slumber Deluxe. The bassinet mode on a play yard is usually lower still: 4moms publishes 18 lb for the Breeze Plus bassinet and Graco publishes under 15 lb for the Simple Solutions bassinet. These are the lowest numbers on the whole product.

Can a newborn sleep in a travel crib?

Yes, where the brand publishes it. Guava publishes the Lotus for newborn to three, and Newton publishes its cribs for children up to 35 in tall with the mattress resting on the floor. A newborn in a travel crib is the normal use of the product — the bassinet is the optional upgrade, not the requirement.

Does the Newton play yard come with a bassinet?

No. Newton lists a bassinet as sold separately for the Deluxe and does not list one for the Compact on the page we read, and publishes no limits for it. If you want a bassinet level included with published limits, a play yard with a bassinet mode is the product to shop.

Is a bassinet safer than a crib for a newborn?

Neither is safer by category. What matters is a firm, flat sleep surface, nothing loose in the sleep space, and using the product inside the limits its manufacturer publishes. The AAP's 2022 recommendations cover the surface; the product's own limits cover the rest. Informational, not medical advice.
