Travel bassinets are a short-window category and the honest way to shop them is to accept that. Every published limit we found lands at about 20 lb or five months, and rolling over frequently ends it sooner. The case for skipping the bassinet
A travel crib rated from newborn covers the same months and keeps going for three years. Guava publishes newborn to three for the Lotus, with a purpose-made low-VOC mattress from day one. If you are buying one sleep product for a trip and the child will be traveling again, the crib is the better purchase and the bassinet is a convenience.
The counter-argument is real and it is about your back at 3am. Reaching into a floor-level crib eight times a night in the newborn weeks is meaningfully harder than reaching into a bassinet at waist height. If those weeks are the trip you are planning for, buy the bassinet.
What we’d skip
Inclined bassinets and rockers that hold an angle at rest. The AAP specifies no more than a 10-degree incline for infant sleep. A product that parks a baby at an angle is not a sleep surface.
Bassinets with no published weight limit. It is the one number the category is defined by.
Buying a bassinet and a travel crib for a single trip. Pick one. Two sleep products for a week away is two checked bags.

Are airline bassinets the same thing?
No, and it is worth being clear about. An airline bassinet — Delta calls its version a SkyCot — is provided by the airline, attaches to a bulkhead wall, and has its own limits: Delta publishes under 25 lb and up to 26 in long, on widebody international flights or widebody domestic flights over 1,500 miles, with only two per aircraft. How long does a travel bassinet last?
Where limits are published they run to about 20 lb or five months, and rolling over usually ends bassinet use before the weight limit does. Plan on four to six months and buy accordingly.
Is a bassinet safer than a travel crib for a newborn?
Neither is safer by category. Both are appropriate when they conform to the relevant safety standard and are used flat, with the pad they shipped with, a fitted sheet and nothing else. The AAP names a crib, bassinet or portable play yard with a firm flat mattress as appropriate surfaces.
Can I use a bassinet in a hotel?
Yes, and the height is a real advantage in a room where floor space is tight — a 33 x 18 in footprint fits where a 45 in travel crib does not. The trade-off is that the stage ends in months rather than years.
