Baby Carrier Weight Limits by Age

Every published range in one table, plus the distinction that catches people out: the weight a carrier is tested to is not the weight it is comfortable at.

The short answer

Published ranges by type: stretchy wraps 7-35 lb, ring slings to 35 lb, structured carriers 7-45 lb, hip seats 8-45 lb, and framed hiking carriers 48-53 lb of total load including gear. The number that catches people out is comfort: a carrier without a hip belt is often unpleasant well below its tested limit.

Tested limit versus comfort limit

This is the single most useful distinction on this page, and one brand states it outright. BabyBjörn publishes the Mini as recommended for 0-6 months and up to 15 lb, while separately noting it is safety tested for 7-24 lb and 21-30 in (babybjorn.com, read 2026-09-27). Nine pounds separate those two numbers, and the reason is the absence of a load-bearing hip belt.

Generalize from that. Any carrier that puts its load entirely on your shoulders — every wrap, every ring sling, every minimal front carrier — has a comfort ceiling well below its tested one. Carriers with a padded hip belt do not, which is why structured carriers can honestly claim 45 lb. If a listing gives you one number and no hip belt, assume the usable figure is lower and plan accordingly.

Rough age mapping, with the caveat

Weight and age correlate loosely and individual children vary enormously, so treat this as orientation rather than a rule. Using US growth norms as a rough guide, most babies pass 15 lb somewhere in the first six months, 25 lb somewhere in the second year, and 35 lb around three. What that means practically:

  • Birth to about 6 months: any type works. Wrap, sling, Mini, or a structured carrier on its newborn setting.
  • About 6 to 18 months: stretchy wraps start to sag and minimal carriers start to hurt. A structured carrier with a hip belt is the reliable answer.
  • 18 months to 3 years: structured carrier or hip seat only. A 28 lb child on one shoulder is a short-burst proposition.
  • Past 3 years: framed packs for trails, hip seats for everything else, and mostly the child walks.

Questions parents actually ask

What is the weight limit on a baby carrier?

It depends on the type. Stretchy wraps run 7-35 lb, ring slings to about 35 lb, structured carriers to 45 lb, hip seats to 45 lb, and framed hiking carriers to a total load of 48-53 lb including gear. Always read the specific model's figure — the spread within each category is wide.

Why does my carrier feel uncomfortable below its weight limit?

Because most limits are structural test results, not comfort ratings. BabyBjörn is unusually honest about this: the Mini is safety tested to 24 lb but the brand states it is most comfortable for the wearer up to 15 lb. Any carrier without a load-bearing hip belt will have a similar gap.

Can I use a carrier past its stated limit?

No. The limit is what the manufacturer tested the structure to, and exceeding it puts the load path — buckles, webbing, stitching — outside what was certified. If your child has outgrown a carrier, the answer is a different carrier.

At what age do most children stop being carried?

Published limits go to 45 lb, which is well past the point most families stop. In practice most stop somewhere between two and three years, when the child walks reliably. The limiting factor is usually the adult's back, not the carrier's rating.

Do framed carriers have a different kind of limit?

Yes — they publish a total capacity that includes your gear, not just the child. The Osprey Poco's 48.5 lb total covers a child up to 40 lb plus what you put in the 22 L of storage. Reading that as a 48.5 lb child limit would be a mistake.
